【New Zealand Study Tour Sharing】Haqqa Dance

On 28 February 2019, we went to a Maori village in Rotorua. A guided tour showed us Maori history through their geothermal fields, steaming lakes and bubbling mud fields, and the most unforgettable experience I got was the Maori war dance --- “Haqqa Dance”. Traditionally, the movements, sounds and gestures of ‘Haqqa Dance’ were used to scare off Maori’s enemies; in modern time, they were used to excite the audience and pull them into the performance. People used powerful movements, strong sounds and vivid expressions like rolling their tongues in and out or dilated eyes to psychologically intimidate their opponents.
